"I dream of a world where psychiatrists become obsolete"—Meet Dr. Brittany Albright, MD, MPH, Osmind's Newest Medical Advisor
When Dr. Albright founded Sweetgrass Psychiatry in 2017, she wasn't aiming to build South Carolina's largest physician-owned psychiatric practice—she was creating a model where quality care, insurance accessibility, and clinician wellbeing could coexist.
Now, as Osmind's newest Medical Advisor, she's bringing that same practical vision to help accelerate breakthrough treatments in psychiatry and build systems that prioritize patients over paperwork.
In her own words:
Why I'm Excited About the Future of Psychiatry—and Why I Joined Osmind
By Brittany Albright, MD, MPH
I'm Dr. Brittany Albright, an adult and addiction psychiatrist based in Charleston, SC. I started my practice, Sweetgrass Psychiatry, in 2017 as a solo private practice doctor, and since then, it has grown into the largest physician-owned psychiatry practice in South Carolina. But the truth is, I didn't set out to build a large practice—I just wanted to create a clinical environment where patients receive the best care possible, where I could accept insurance and provide psychotherapy to my patients, and where clinicians don't burn out trying to provide it.
Why I Chose Psychiatry (and Why I'm Passionate About Changing It)
My journey into medicine started with a deep curiosity about healthcare systems and access to care. During an early study abroad program, I saw firsthand how other countries approach universal healthcare—and how our system in the U.S. falls short in many ways. That experience led me to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) before medical school because I knew I wanted to have an impact beyond just treating patients one at a time.
Our healthcare system has problems. Big ones. We focus too much on costly, late-stage (tertiary) care and not enough on early intervention and prevention. We also waste enormous resources on unnecessary administrative work, creating barriers for both patients and clinicians. Our healthcare system is frustratingly inefficient, and those inefficiencies cost lives, burn out providers, waste money, and limit access to care.
The Future of Psychiatry: Where We Need to Go
When I think about where mental healthcare needs to go, my vision is clear:
- Accessibility, affordability, and quality should be non-negotiable. Mental healthcare shouldn't be a luxury—it should be something everyone can access without jumping through hoops.
- We need to rapidly adopt treatments that work. Psychiatry is on the cusp of some game-changing breakthroughs, including new neuromodulatory techniques and psychedelic therapies. These treatments have the potential to transform mental healthcare, but we need to push for faster implementation, affordability, safe use, best practices, and better access.
- Let's use technology to bring humanity back into medicine. Right now, so much of our time is spent on paperwork, insurance claims, prior authorizations, HR, and administrative tasks. If we can automate and streamline these processes, we can shift the focus back where it belongs—on the patient sitting in front of us, not the computer screen in front of us.
At the end of the day, I dream of a future where I can finally just sit on the couch and binge-watch Netflix because my psychiatry services are barely needed—because we've successfully treated, prevented, or even eradicated mental illness.
Why I Joined Osmind
I'm incredibly excited to join Osmind as a Medical Advisor because their team truly understands what psychiatrists need. They're not just building another EHR—they're creating a system and a community that actually makes our jobs easier. A few things that really stand out to me about Osmind:
- They listen to clinicians. Instead of having psychiatrists adapt to rigid systems, they're designing their platform around our needs—helping us cut through administrative clutter so we can spend more time with patients.
- They care about education and collaboration. Osmind is building an online community of like-minded clinicians, where we can learn, share, and grow together. Psychiatry can feel isolating, but having a network of professionals to collaborate with makes a significant difference.
- They're advancing the field of psychiatry. From psychedelic-assisted therapy to neuromodulation, they're supporting the treatments that will define the future of mental healthcare.
There's Never Been a More Exciting Time in Psychiatry
Right now, we're on the cusp of a major shift in how we treat mental illness. We finally have the science and technology to move beyond trial-and-error prescribing and toward more personalized, effective treatments. We're seeing breakthroughs in neuroplasticity through the use of neuromodulation, esketamine, ketamine, and psychedelic therapy that will change lives on a massive scale.
And that's why I'm so passionate about what I do—because I believe we're at the start of something incredible. With the right tools, the right treatments, and the right innovations + automations, we have the power to completely redefine mental healthcare.
I'm thrilled to be working with Osmind, and I can't wait to see what the future holds—for our field, for our patients, and for all of us who have dedicated our lives to making mental healthcare better.
